Festival of Britain (1951)

The Festival Pattern Group developed decorative motifs based on crystal structures and molecular diagrams — atomic-age optimism given physical form. Abram Games' target poster for the Festival combined formal precision with warm primary colour. Post-war Britain inventing a bright future from scientific first principles: molecular models, festival typography, and the confident sense that things would now get better.

This time it drew a red, blue and gold compass rose with atomic orbits, starbursts and a small Britannia profile at its centre. The tradition picks the kind of subject, not the particular one, so another attempt would give you a different crystalline motif, in different colours and a different arrangement.

Gig poster

This time it went with a large red-and-blue compass rose wrapped in atomic orbits, with coloured molecular lattices around the sides and all the event copy intact.
