4AD Records (1980–2000s)

Vaughan Oliver and his studio 23 Envelope developed a visual language for 4AD that was unlike anything else in music packaging. Distressed photographic textures, etched line drawings, gothic romanticism, and dreamlike collage — the aesthetic of Cocteau Twins, This Mortal Coil, and Pixies. Ambiguous, beautiful, slightly threatening, and entirely resistant to easy explanation.

Fête poster

This time it settled on a weathered Gothic arch tangled with thorny red growth against a dark rural landscape, with the fête details arranged beneath it. Run it again and the tradition holds while the details move: expect another dreamlike image.

Gig poster

This time it landed on a monumental, vine-etched Gothic arch in a dark flooded cloister, with red and blue reflections behind the large serif bill. Run it again and the tradition holds while the details move: expect another dreamlike image.
